The abundance of plants are mainly due to the increased phosphate and nitrate flowing into the lake. So far it hasn't gone pea soupy - probably thnks to its shallowness. The Moy drainage in the 1960s(?) undoubtedly lowered the lake but I think the controls on the outflow are more important nowadays. To avoid land flooding I think they are kept low. The shallower the lake though the greater the extent of reeds and club rush especially crowding into from the edges to the centre
