Froursjam, Yes, i think you've got to the core of the situation there. The system in Holland sounds good. Lots of parents simply dont have the resources to provide entertainment on a full time basis, in the absense of money trees who could. Every now and then,i take my nieces and nephew to the bowling alley, this usually sets me back an arm and a leg, some toes and maybe even a few teeth. I dont blame most of the parents, tackling this situation is something we all have to take on board, instead of giving out about kids. I agree the holidays are far too long.
John,
Dont want to wrap the youngsters up in cotton wool, i believe teens need to become independant too. I just feel this is a situation where adults do need to help them to help themselves. I grew up in Castlebar also, from my point of view, clubs or things that were set up, did so with the backing of the wider community. I think a multi faceted approach is needed. i know my niece 15, went looking for a job this summer, people wont take her on untill shes sixteen, for insurance purposes. I wasnt trying to be PC, thats just how I feel.
