Bonfire night was regarded as being an anti-Irish affair for a considerable period. They sounded surprised that Guy Fawkes night wasn't taken down by the Race Relations Act. Anti-Italian might have been more accurate really because they burnt effigies of the Pope on the bonfires - no Irish popes so far but then we used to own the Eurovision so you never know. Who would have thought - Poland, then Germany producing Popes?
