Speaking from personal experience I think Castlebar is a better town, I lived in Ballina for 2 years and found it dirty, poor shopping, lots of crime and no sense of community, also if you have to work in Galway etc it is out of the way, I am now living in Castlebar for past 2 years, it has crime but most of it involves night clubs/takeaway fights, it is a great shopping town, there is a modern hospital, cinema, bowling, go carting etc, i find a great sense of community and pride in housing estates, I would not dream of telling anyone where to live but for me Castlebar ticks all boxes
