There are only TWO litter wardens for the whole of County Mayo and anytime I've reported an abandoned vehicle, etc. the lads have been on the case ASAP.
They are vastly under resourced for the area that they are supposed to cover and let's face it, trying to investigate illegal dumping is bloody hard work without any of the CSI type gadgetry and science - these guys have to hope to find a bill or something with a name and address on it before they can even attempt to trace the dumpers.
With regard to the Walking Festival Poster debacle it was a bit like Saipan - the walking festival people (hard working volunteers) came head to head with the hard working litter warden (who was only doing his job) and the poor excuse we have for 'local media' here exploited the ill feeling and made a big bru-hahah out of it to fill their filthy rags.
The litter wardens have to work within the law but someone at a level above the warden shoulda taken an interest and sorted the it all out without it becoming a song and dance.
There are so many issues in our county that no one likes to take responsibilty for and no one is accountable for . . . it's the same at national level.
