Every death by whatever means is very sad and so many are avoidable. It looks like we could be heading again for around 400 road deaths this year. This figure includes about 130 pedestrian deaths, almost 3 a week!
In my opinion most deaths and accidents are caused by driver error and let's face it, we are probably the worst drivers in the world...we take up incorrect road positions, lane hop all the times, don't indicate, take impatience to a new level, drive and talk on cell phones, park dangerously, break speed limits, don't turn on lights until we really can't do without them etc.
But back to fatalities. In the late 1960s, there were almost 700 people killed on Irish roads at a time when we had almost ten times fewer vehicles. Now there are 400 killed with ten times more vehicles. We are inproving, but we have a long long way to go. Please take care out there, and please please be clearly seen, whether you are pedrestrian, cyclist, motorist.
