I met Liam Cronin, formerly of Davitt's Tce, at lunch time in Tralee today. We remarked on how the spirit in Kerry is really one of turning up, beating Mayo and getting the cup back as quickly as possible. There is a fair amount of hype. Radio kerry had a reporter in my school today interviewing kids about the game. The local Super Valu has massive window paintings of Gooch and Kieran Donnaghy, known locally as Star. There is a street in Tralee called Rock St, known as the street of champions because so many residents down the years have won All Ireland medals. As I walk into town every day, I am confronted by a very large hoarding, covered in Kerry flags which reads: Star is the man, this is the Rock, go on the Kerry team, from all in the street of champions.
Another shop has picture of Donaghy with the slogan, Star - an fear is fearr! So the place is getting hyped up. Every school window has Kerry colours, Kerry jerseys are everywhere, Mayo people like myself are treated to frequent patronising smiles. We live in hope!!!!
