I suspect that the name is one that was used for many generations. Probably, it was called 'Church Lake' because of an old medieval church in the graveyard; only traces of that edifice now exists. On the old Ordnance Maps, the graveyard was termed a 'Churchyard'- it is hard to be certain of the origin of the name.
