Having read all of the posts on this topic I feel that many people missed out one important point. The church is not pushing this - a group of parishioners raised 700000 with the express purpose of building the spire. They have no intention of giving it to the church for any other use. It is their money and up to them to decide what to do with it. Of course it would be wonderful to give this to many deserving causes but how do we know that these obviously wealthy people do not also give generous donations to other charities all the time. I say that it's time to stop the begrudgery and preaching and let them get on with it. After all no money from the church envelopes is going towards it.
