A minor point you missed is that the Spire will cost a million euro to build & the people of Castlebar are being asked to cough up the remaining €300,000 plus still expected to contribute to Church collections!

If the Spire "only" cost €700,000 & could be built solely on the funds from the generous donors - fair enough let them off, no one is begrudging them anything on that point.

What is bothering many in the town, as can be witnessed on this Bulletin Board is the amount of money being spent on something only a few seem to think is a serious necessity, while the majority are being made to feel they are letting down their fore fathers by not supporting the decision of a few, while still being expected to fork out money on a white elephant which could be better spent or raised for other more necessary projects in the town.
