Blacksburg was put up as an example of a highly wired town when the information age town thing was beng promoted by the then telecom eireann. Castlebar should aspire to being a Blacksburg in other words with all the great community stuff that they had going on there. Fascinatingly last night on Sky and BBC they devoted huge amounts of time to telling us how quickly the bloggers (all anonymous) were on the net telling the world what had happened there. mobile phone uploads, etc. More or less the same thing as the bould ho chi min was doing himself except that he resorted to snail mail rather than email to send in his package. Blacksburg tells the world using the latest technology to do so. The monotone voice said it all though clearly he was hugely depressed and bonkers. But even more bonkers was the member of the local shoot-em-up-gun-toters society who said - "This proves that we all need to carry arms to protect ourselves. If those college kids all had concealed weapons then only two or three people would have died no thirty three - they would have shot back at ho. Ho! ho! And nary a word about the 200 people killed in Bagdad yesterday? But then western lives are that much more important and newsworthy - at least by a factor of 10.
