"dont like the the idea of royal families" ok but the majority of the people in the Uk do and want a monarchy, but you live in Ireland and it does not apply to you so you are ok then, "The union jack is a flag that has been forced onto many nations around the world throughout history." yes but not now! the german flag was forced on many countries in world war two but i dont hear you giving out to them? and also the soviet red flag was forced on many nations yet you remain silent on them? i am Australian we have the Queen as our head of state as does Canada and many commonwealth countries we could change it if we wanted to but a few years ago we voted not to it, it was our choice i believe in Canada they to which to have the Queen Elizabeth as their head of state, my point is the republic of Ireland from what i can see in last years has built up an excellent relationship with the Uk thanks to your leaders and Tony Blair and his Government surly now is the time to build on that? history is important, but whatever were the wrongs in the past surley you cant blame people who in this generation were not even born, but all they want to do is get on with their lives and live in peace, i like you have likes and dislikes but i keep them to myself i would never take them out on the citizens of any country remember there is great respect for Ireland among the majority of all people in the Uk i speak from living both in the Uk and Ireland for many years, many hundreds of thosands of Irish people have lived in the Uk over the years just as in recent times from other posts on here nearly three hundred thosand people from the Uk live in Ireland, and many from my own country, there are not many nations on this planet that dont have blood on their hands from the past and present in some cases, even Ireland has not been free from that, i read recently of how many Nazi generals made who were in charge of concentration camps were made welcome into Ireland after the second world war, but i dont use that as an excuse to not like the Irish flag, i agree with your sentiments regarding the future of both your countries history is all well and good when looking back from where we are now, but maybe the Uk and Ireland could now go forward together in peace at last and mutual respect in the New Europe that has been created, we Australians have alot in commom with the Uk and would never want to sever those links, we also have a strong liking for Ireland for many reasons
