Keane may not deserve the full crititism he receives but he certainly deserves a large portion. He did not want to be in the world cup in the first place but was persuaded to go by Fergie. Having made the commitment to the team he should have honoured it as it was too late to name a replacement. He was looking for an excuse to leave and let the team down. This was not the first time either. Brian Clough had to send him home from a European cup match with Forest, and even Fergie, in the end, couldn't put up with him. Both Clough and Fergie had some power over him as they paid his wages, McCarthy had none and became a victim of his ego. It can never be a good sign in a team sport when the rest of the team applaud when their captain deserts them.
