Anyone know the reason why Westport – two time Tidy Towns Winner refuses to house or build a Halting Site for travellers? Check out the statistics, which were in last weeks Mayo News: Mayo County Council traveller housing figures reveal that since 1999, there were 23 traveller families accommodated in Ballina (includes Respond Social Housing); 19 in Castlebar; and two in Westport. Curiously, there have been 15 families housed in Ballyhaunis, which is about half the size of Westport. Census 2006 figures which revealed that Ballina – in its category of towns with populations of 10,000+ – had the second-highest ratio in the country of travellers to settled people (279). County town Castlebar took fourth place in the same category (227), while Westport – in the 5000+ category – revealed a dramatically different statistic, with a miniscule population of nine travellers Any answers???
