Blair and Brown knew in their hearts it was wrong. Our lads have no much
moral qualms. Ahern will now take home a hefty €310,000 -- €43,000 more
than Gordon Brown, who leads a country of 60 million people, and €20,000
more than George W Bush.
The Dutch prime minister somehow gets by on an annual wage of €123,000
while in Poland the new PM Donald Tusk will have to make do with looking
after 38.5 million people on a salary of €49,500.
Meanwhile the thousands of poorly paid frontline public sector staff will
go on enduring increasingly poor conditions. Senior nurses will still get
paid a lousy €38,213 a year for slogging it out in a failing health
service. And new gardai will try and figure out how to stretch a starting
salary of just €22,500.
Ahern's poodles will say he's worth every cent, he's the best Taoiseach we
ever had. The reality is anything but. The opposition have called the pay
awards disgusting, appalling, outrageous.
