If that was the consensus of opinion then it needs to be respected but if others now wish to pay for the erection of a spire from their own wealth, then why exclude them? Surely, it could be argued that it’s to the greater glory of God and that of all your neighbours. Why should erecting a spire give the wrong impression? Frankly, the way Castlebar is presently being despoiled by ugly, bland and unimaginative development, the town deserves to be graced by something better. In the final analysis, we are but caretakers to the generations that follow and will be accordingly judged by what we leave to them.
