To the best of my knowledge Cardinal Connell has not said "that he must protect the victims who suffered by refusing what was said in private to their lawyers". He has said that the files " are privileged" ( It is now a fact that victims wounds and hurt have been re-opened by the actions of the Cardinal)
Any objective analysis of Cardinals Connell`s utterances and actions over certain cases of sexual abuse by priests (admitted by the perpetrators) conclude that at best he was economical with the truth. Archbishop Diarmuid Martin on the other hand wants full cooperation with the tribunal to ensure truth and transparency. In short Cardinal Connell primary concern seems to be the protection of paedophile priests ( despite utterances to the contrary ) while Diarmuid Martin`s primary concern is for the victims and truth and transparency.
