But if one is intent on convincing people to assist one in grabbing any sizeable amount of land Then religion is a very handy tool.

Likewise if two groups of people are to remain at each others throats for four hundred odd years fighting, persecuting and terrorising each other then they need some means of identifying or labelling people as "one of us/them". In the absence of any obvious difference of physical appearance or language religion is the next best thing.
