I remember marching in the St. Pat's parade with St. Patrick's National Boy's School back in the 80's...we were all told by one of the female organising teachers not to smile or wave at our parents/families during the parade!
I'm sure such backward thinking no longer persists amongst the organisers of our young national school children - all the better!
