Its not quite as bad as that (albeit not far off) but it should be remembered that cars nowadays are quite a bit more fuel efficent (then again the nearest thing to an SUV back then was a fairly boxy land rover)
Anyone else remember those big electromechanical displays on petrol pumps (and the "multiply this price by ..." stickers) and the petrol pumps in main streets of towns. Nowadays the health and safety police would have puppies but I dont remember anyone blowing themselves to kingdom come (or taking half the street with them).
