Get AVG Anti Virus. Its free and pretty good.

Spybot S&D and Adaware are two good free spyware removal programs.

Spywareblaster is also a useful free utility.

Does the program appear in the Control Panel->Add Remove Programs ? If so uninstall it from there.

Go To Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services and if you see "dodgy" entries in here, disable them.

Its no easy task to manually remove unwanted stuff as the installation of these has gotten very sophisticated in recent times.
