Council elections are due in June. I was just thinking, what purpose do Councillors actually serve? It must cost at least a million euro to cover the expenses of the County Councillors alone, not to mention the Town Councillors. Surely this money could be better spent? Also, it always puzzles me how Town Coulcillors have to approve a rates budget for business premises each year, yet most of them are not business people, so therefore we can presume that they do not have insight into the costs involved in running a business, which is a factor which should be considered. Perhaps it is time to reduce the number of Co. Councillors to no more than 15 and Town Councillors to no more that 5? Otherwise why not abolish the councils completely and set up a community forum in each town.
