Indded Jim Dooge (then Professor of Engineering at UCD) was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by Garret Fitzgerald in the early 80s. What a breath of fresh air. I recall him being interviewed by RTE following his appointment. What a man. He sat in front of the interviewer and answered questions in coherent English without recourse to bullshit or waffle . What a contrast to the wallies we have had in recent years led by the Clown Prince of Drumcondra.
