i wouldnt go for a second hand laptop, more or less (not always) there is a reson for replacing, laptops are not as easy to fix as PC's and because they are mobile they are more than likely to get a bit of a knocking, personally i would go for a new one, they have came down in price.

i got a eee pc great for basic things, small and compact.

i would only get a second hand laptop if i new the person or if it was got for someone that hardly ever used it ( a few family members come to mind :)
