Re Huh comment, any practising lawyer ( solicitor or barrister ) of at least ten years experience can apply to be appointed a judge. There is a screening committee - called Judicial Appointments Commission or similar who shortlist a number of candidates. I also believe ( since the Curtin case at least that there is a discreet check with the local Garda Superintendent. The Cabinet on the recommendation of the Minister for Justice appoints from the shortlist.
