Not wishing to get party political, but like Gordon Brown on the other side of the Irish Sea, Cowen hasn't fought a general election as Taoiseach or leader of a political party yet - so my point still stands.
After the next general election we might have our second Taoiseach who wasn't elected to lead a government by the public...then I'd think he'd melt into political obscurity. Until then Bruton is the only Taoiseach who never lead his party into government after a general election - so it's a bit presumptuous to think European heads of government would appoint him as EU President.
