He's highly respected in political circles in Europe which was how he got the prized US job. He also seems to be well regarded in the US for that job. I don't understand your criticism of his performance, ambassadors are not supposed to be highly visible. They are there to smooth things over, work behind the scenes bridge differences. The EU and the US, the two parties that he works with, both think he's done a good job. Whether he's EU president material is another matter. I think the more diplomatic roles suits him more than a very public one. So the question is what will the EU president role be. A nice diplomatic Irish President type role, which would suit him, or a more active US president role, which I'm not so sure about.
