And to think that you and your friends once ran some of the biggest construction firms in the country, assisted by your mates in a well known bank. Your angst is the guilt you now feel related to the 70 billion euro bill that you have left for the taxpayer to pay, and the effect that this bill will have on the provision of social services in years to come, not to mention the loss of sovereignty that we now face with the ECB beginning to dictate. You feel guilty because as a high roller the state was very generous to you over the years. You availed of every tax break going; reducing your taxable income to near zero while the other saps in the PAYE sector coughed up. Look, the billions of euro that could have been collected from you and your friends to build the schools and provide the broadband would probably have been wasted anyway, remember the e-voting machines, PPars, Farmeleigh, Thornton Hall, etc. You invested in section 23's and in car parks and in student accommodation to avoid paying for the running of the country and cleverly you set yourself up as a tax exile to be doubly sure. Now you have to turn to the state yourself for a bailout. And now the pressure is compounded because your friends in Government are soon to lose power. God be with the days when you could fly to Galway in the chopper, make your contribution in the tent and then sit back in the knowledge that the party was looking after your needs. Gilmore has some neck wanting to bring all that to an end.!! |
