MINISTER STICK TO YOUR BRIEF.
Michael Ring, T.D. Junior Minister for Tourism and Sport would be better employed to sick to his brief as tourism minister and become involved in the promotion of cultural and heritage tourism in all of Mayo including Castlebar. Cultural tourism is being promoted by Failte Ireland as one of the fastest growing sectors in the tourism market.
The purchase of the Imperial Hotel in Castlebar by our local councils could lead to the development of a major heritage and cultural centre in the county town. It is not often that an opportunity to purchase a building of such important historical value comes on the market.
If it were not for the foresight of Deputy Enda Kenny T.D. and Deputy Michael D. Higgins T.D., along with Mayo County Council to purchasing Turlough Park House some years, Mayo would not have a facility as important as the Museum of Country Life. This facility has been one of the success stories in the development of tourism in Connaught. There is no reason why this former hotel, a listed heritage building, could not be developed into another flagship project in the development of tourism in the West.
It is time to get away from the negative ranting of some of our elected public representatives and do everything in our power to positively promote our fine county.Remember that It is current government policy to promote the fact that: “Ireland is open for business. “
