Have you actually looked at the state of the building recently?
Under private ownership it has decayed - to put it mildly. It's been up for sale for way too long.
Anyone who thinks that some private-sector fairy godmother was going to buy it and run it as a hotel then you haven't been listening to the news of late. Trippittoni's salary is one thing but after the tribunal's report...?
If it went the way of the convent a couple of hundred metres (if even) away on rock Square - can you imagine the outcry against the council? A totally justified failure of regulation - for letting half of one side of the iconic Castlebar Mall drop off the edge of the planet, and just happening to be, incidentally, the home of the resistance to wealthy private sector property exploiters, aka land league.
If the public sector allowed it be bulldozed late some Friday night when diesel was cheap enough to be able to afford to put enough into the tanks of one of those underemployed Hitachi lead-ball swingers - what then?
I remember being given a cup of tea in the old convent - now demolished - by an old nun one afternoon.
I remember the fire in the hearth in the Imperial too and the cramped meetings in bedrooms upstairs - nostalgia is wot you wont it 2 b.
But no money so let the country crumble around our ears with the private sector who got us into this mess blaming the public sector for trying to teach kids, fix broken limbs, stop crime, provide safe drinking water - all while the ship goes down and the rich get richer?
