I agree it's very unappealing from a tourist perspective as your first impression of the west, especially given the views.
The mounds piled up along the road to stop parking are ugly and there's no grass, trees or shrubs anywhere just exposed piles of soil and rocks along with old equipment fencing. If they remove the heather they should replace it with something appropriate.
The terminal is also very cheap and ugly looking from the apron side. Cosmetic issue but it doesn't given the impression the departure fee is being spent on the passenger facilities. It might not stop most people booking but it creates a negative view of the airport for people coming from outside the region.
They had a new entrance design planned back in 2007, with a new roundabout and easier drop off point in front of the terminal, new car hire areas and covered walkways to car parks along with extensive landscaping.
However it was held up for 2 years by an objection from An Taisce, and now there 's no money.
