Hi Ted, I think both Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness would have attended but they had to look at the political fallout, They would perhaps have lost some support (votes)in the next Northern Ireland elections. So in my opinion it was not principal but political expediency which caused them not to attend.
As for papering over cracks, I think the Queen's visit did not cover all the cracks but I think her visit certainly put a large sheet of paper on the wall.
So you think the protests were peaceful, then you and I must have been looking at different television pictures.
