The Bonfire Is run by the Order of Malta, An Garda Síochána, Fire Servece and Castlebar town Council so personally I think its in safe hands.

In relation to your concern about the landscape around the bonfire, firstly I understand that everyone involved is cleaning up afterwards and there will be plenty of bins around the place, there is no alcohol allowed at the event so you don’t have to worry about broken glass. The only damage that I can see that will be caused is a small area of grass where the fire is taking place, which will grow back.
Plenty of Bonfires are held in areas around and in Castlebar on that night so by having this one community bonfire it may reduce the amount of estate bonfires.
This is an opportunity for families to attend a fun and SAFE bonfire where they can meet other members of the community.

On the other hand if you are still not happy with the bonfire there are a wide range of programs on T.V that night including Eastenders, Fair City and animals do the funniest things.
