I have argued here several times that increases in taxes don't yield the returns many expect (even acknowledged by Sinn Fein). Artists etc are extremely flexible with their status of residency (aka U2) so any increase in taxes has to realise that some (not all) have the ability to move offshore.
Betting is a similar risk, and examining the UK liberal/low tax approach has not curbed the move of the majors to Gibraltar and Jersey.
Equine/farming have their issues also.
But austerity, regardless of tax increases or lower spending causes a decrease in GDP. So therefore other measures need to be examined.
But it is a case of either way we go we are damned. But there are positives too, and we need to focus on them.
