The one thing that bothered me most from the post is the assumption there is 400,000 over 50 in employment - there is roughly only 450,000 aged 50-65 in Ireland (and I think the participation rate is less than 90%).
Ireland is a significantly younger country and although we don't have Census 2011 numbers yet, Census 2006 showed the following - and more detail available ion CSO website:
I know there has been immigration in the last couple of years, but there actually has been net migration (in) since 2006, and the higher percentage of that is likely to be in the younger cohorts.
We are a young country, and the 1975-1985 births are the "baby boomers" in Ireland, versus post war across Europe,
