regressive taxes

Posted by jj on October 31, 2011 at 13:23:09:

This research has surprised me and the level of regression there is in VAT increases. OK, this research is for the UK, but I think can be applied to Ireland also.

I must admit this differs from my view that VAT rises hurts the lower less, but this research seems to refute this.

I am only posting here to inform people but shows the issue in raising new taxes (and it is possible that the government are looking to raise taxes in the next budget instead of income taxes).

I would be against raising of income taxes, but I think they would be preferable to any rise in VAT.
