The centre of Castlebar is relatively small and easy to get around by foot or bicycle. There is now public transport to speak of except Taxis if you could consider them public transport. The railway is about a 10 minute walk from the town centre and the bus stop is actually in the town centre (You will notice one anomality in Castlebar, a legacy of the Celtic tiger era, that the commercial town centre is now located in an area called Hopkins road around the major supermarkets wheras the former town centre around Main St has been in commercial decline for the last 15 or so years)
As for place to stay, there are a number of apartments targeting the student and young professional market that may or may not have vacancies this time of year. They are located on the aforementioned Hopkins Rd, Spencer Park and on the Ballinrobe Rd adjacent to teh Railway Station. Apart from that if you are looking for a house or room to rent relatively central to town your best bets may be The Knockaphunta/Westport Rd Area, Chestnut Grove/ The Curragh or out Garyduff/Newport Rd areas. I imagine it's a renters market at the moment as there are so many vacant properties around.
