It has just been announced that Castlebar Military Barracks is among the barracks to be closed in cost cutting measures by the Government.

Castlebar has been the site of a garrison since 1641. The present barracks dates back to the 1830ís and forms an integral part of Castlebarís history.
Most of the buildings associated by the barracks are protected structures.

In light of the historical importance of these buildings it is imperative that these buildings be taken in to public ownership and be preserved for future generations.
