In modern times Castlebar was never a full-time barracks except on occasions when it was used for exercises or annual camps.
To put it in context there are/were 15 full time PDF (permanent defence force) members based at Castlebar whereas in Mullingar there was over 150 and somewhere roundabout a couple of hundred in Clonmel.
I can understand the closure of so many barracks around the country, especially in the border regions.
The Castlebar Barracks is a great site, it's big, it's in the heart of the town and overlooks everything.
I do hope it finds a purpose - here's my initial suggestions for alternative uses :
Straight away I think it would make a great youth hostel.
A couple of blocks could be set aside as a startup technology park.
A permanent exhibition space for outside events (like the Fair Green used to before it became a school!) - Carnivals, Circuses, outdoor concerts (Castlebar Occasion @ the Barracks - given that this site is the probable location of the original Castle in Castlebar it could even be the Occasion @ the Castle).
Any other suggestions ?
