The Fine Gael led Government are showing their true colours in deciding to do away with decentralization. Dublin at the moment is bursting at the seams, yet the authorities chose to invest more in infrastructure of Dublin and the East coast. This policy reminds us of the old British system of developing "The Pale."
According to Wikipedia this term continues to be used in contemporary Irish speech to refer to County Dublin and its commuter towns, generally critically—for example, a government department may be criticized for concentrating its resources on the Pale.
Once more the people of the West are being treated as second class citizens. It appears as if the policy adopted in the time of Cromwell "To Hell or to Connaught" is once more being adopted by our government masters.
It is time for the people along the West coast to stand up and be counted and let the Government know we are no longer willing to be treated as second class citizens.
