Just reading the account in today's Advertiser regarding the financial state of the Mayo GAA with regard to The McHale park development and it unfortunately sounds like the county board went the way of far to many home buyers in this county and got in far to deep and way above what they could actually afford. It would appear that the Elverys naming deal, however unpalatable it is to GAA purists in the county will only contribute a relatively minor dent to the overall debt burden. Of course the question must be asked whether what was hailed as a brave move in the development of McHale Park in hindsight must be regarded as foolhardy if I it seems, the sums involved or financing arrangements were way over optimistic especially operating on an apparent prospect of National Lottery funding that has not come to fruition. In any case, be that as it may, it seems the county board has one hell of a financial headache on it's hands that makes the planning furore look like a picnic.
Perhaps the solution lies in the same methods that were used in the 80's to fianance developments at Pairc Ui Caomh with Siamsa cois Lee and in Semple stadium with the Trip to Tipp so maybe we'll see Castlebar rocking in the years to come to some headline acts?
