According to householdcharge.ie, the aim of the residential charge is to fund local services through local property-based charges.
In 2006 there were 43,218 permanent private households in Mayo.
The population of Castlebar in 2006 was 10,655. Pop. of Mayo in the same year was 123,839.
Castlebar has 8.6% the population of Mayo which means there are roughly 3,716 households in Castlebar.
3,716 x €100 residential charge = €371,600. 2006 was pre the end of the boom so there are definitely more permanent private houses than 3,716 which would bring the take from the residential charge up even further.
It will be interesting to see how much of this money makes it in to Castlebar Town Council's budget next year.
