It is the gateway airport to the West of Ireland is it not? How is that stupid.
It's domestic passengers are drawn from a wide catchment from Donegal to Galway generally known as the West of Ireland. The name is inclusive.
If only 1% of its users are going to a small town called Knock, and 99% going to other towns in the region does it make business sense to name it after the former? No.
If you live in the West, or want to visit the west coast of Ireland from abroad does having an Ireland West airport not make the travel decision much easier and ensure visitors choose Knock over Dublin, Shannon etc?
Which is more important to you, a thriving gateway airport bringing tourism an business, or Idolotry?
Yes IWAK is a bit awkward but locals know where the airport is and will always know it as Knock. But in marketing overseas it makes complete sense to just call it Ireland West Airport.
