I don't know what the breakdown of the expenses are but keep in mind that Mickey Ring is a Minister and therefore has a ministerial car, whereas Michelle has to use her own transport.

Using basic math and low numbers, if Michelle only takes one trip to Dublin per week her 'fuel only' costs should be somewhere around about the 2K mark.

Dublin - Ballina = 153miles / 246kms
Avg Pet/Diesel Price = 1.50 per litre
On a fuel consumption of 20kpl
Dublin once a week for 52 weeks = 104 journeys
104journeys x 246kms = 25,584 kms
25,584kms / 20kpl = 1,279.20
1,279.20 x 1.50 = 1,918.80

Depreciation on her own vehicle, food, accomodation, etc. all add up - though personally as she's from Ballina I think she should take the train.
