Looking at the recent behaviour of councillors both urban and county makes me groan.
One county councillor brings to a standstill the working of the regular county council meeting by pursuing a personal vendetta against officials. While over on the urban council there is to be a motion banning fracking which will only feed into the scaremongering that has already been rife in the west on this topic.
Could both councillors not encourage a rational debate on these topics rather than immediately adopting entrenched positions. Could they also focus on the issues which are affecting people in castlebar and mayo, if they do not their relevance will need to be questioned.
When did we stop debating matters of public importance and just become campaigners who bluster from preconceived positions?
Debate is democracy, protest campaigns are just ideology masquerading as democracy.
