1. The Troika deal done by FF after they bankrupt the country now dictates where the money is to be spent.NO getting around that. Nobody is trying to 'justify' cuts - nobody is saying that these are somehow good for our souls - it's not like fasting during Lent or some such. Cuts hurt no matter what.
2. But then perhaps it is time to call a halt on small rural schools and amalgamate them into bigger more viable units that are cheaper to run per pupil and produce better results in terms of basics like reading, writing and mathematics.
3. Interesting piece in the Irish Times yesterday about the subsidies to rural dwellers. The mess of one-off houses around the countryside means that the average taxpayers and consumer pays for their school transport (budget the same size as the capital budget for building and equipping schools, electricity, roads and so on. Low pupil:teacher ratios is one of these subsidies. This was all warned about 30 years ago but ignored and the blight went on unabated. Now the chickens have come home to roost.
