It's no different to the science that discovered magnetism and matched it up with electricity - electromagnetism to give you electricity to power the pumps that pump water for irrigation and drinking water for the thirsty. Electricity to light the room while you read the bible. MRI scanners to detect illness at an early treatable stage. And so on. You may prefer that we don't understand and control electrons but without them I think you would have a lot more starvation than we have today. Lots of food it's distribution and war that causes hunger. (of course global warming plays its part too)

No different to the understanding of gravity and quantum mechanics that gave us mobile phones and satellite communications. All very useful to farmers in the third world who want to get the best price for their produce.

I suggest that we can't predict exactly what 'benefit' knowing more about the origins of the universe will bring but it would be a pity to think that we are advocating ignorance in 2012. The Spanish Inquisition - nobody expected it - but power based on keeping people in ignorance was the root cause.

If you think that the money would have gone to buying food for people instead I doubt it very much. Just look at how many billions of euro the Irish people have put into failed banks instead of feeding starving people?
