My own personal feeling is there are benefits being gained by feet at the top table. However not in any headline grabbing way like Reilly got into trouble over. I've driven a bit around Ireland and it seems to me the amount of general road improvements I see around Mayo seems far higher than what I see elsewhere. Castlebar itself has seen a fair amount of local improvements and Ring has got into trouble previously with his allocations. I think the difference now is when money is being allocated we're at least getting our fair share (or maybe some unnoticed extras), whereas that has not always been the case. Problem is theres not much to be allocated these days.
A taoiseach outside Dublin always has a battle on his hands, even in good times. A taoiseach outside Dublin blatantly favouring his own county in harsh times like these would get crucified in the press and he already had one revolt in his own party so they'd take a chance if they got it too.
So any extras they get, they can't exactly publicise, bit of a no win situation really.
