Just what is the 'celebration' ?
The routing of a British Garrison from a town in a overall situation which led to the massacre of many Irish volunteers at Ballinamuck.
In case you didn't know it .. all the French survivors incl. the Fabulous General d'Humbert were repatriated back to France and treated as 'losers' by their own establishment.
The so called 'battle / races of Castlebar' were little more than a 'skirmish' in the greater scheme of things !
Also don't forget that much of what Castlebar is today came from the British establishment .. its buildings, and The Mall as well as the wealth it generated in having a "garrison' based there.
There were many Castlebar based business's and families who didn't agree with the so called 'French Invasion', which actually wasn't supposed to land in Killala in the first place !
