He was elected on the basis of this policy promise - among others but it wasn't a secret that the Seanad was to be abolished if the referendum (vote of all the people) is passed.
If fulfilling an election promise is 'selling us short' we need to redefine some terms methinks.
Likewise fulfilling promises given in open and fair elections is indeed 'keeping others happy' - although the people who voted for it may not regard themselves as being simply 'others' as you put it - as opposed to the minority who voted against it (who presumably are the unhappy ones) - the real others.
You will get a chance to vote again in the not too distant future.
